Leather Working Group (LWG) has become aware of operational issues at the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) in Bantala, Kolkata India.
LWG aims to follow a well-established and transparent process for addressing such matters. In line with this, we have contacted the CETP to request formal dialogue. Any results from such discussion will be reviewed by both the LWG Technical Subgroup and the Board. However, at this time we have been unable to establish dialogue that will enable a visit and inspection of the site.
In keeping with established practice, this situation has been reviewed by the LWG Technical Sub Group and the Board. Our decision as a result of these processes is that until we receive satisfactory evidence of compliant operation of the CETP and any corrective action that may be necessary, supported by independent verification, Leather Working Group has suspended the certification of the leather manufacturers to which this CETP is connected.
We recommend that brands reach out directly to their leather suppliers in the affected area – particularly those discharging to the CETP in question – to understand the implications for their sourcing and production.
We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as further information becomes available.
