Changes to the assessment of calfskin production

Leather Working Group recognises that the processing of calfskin requires greater water and energy use per square meter of material produced than other bovine materials.  Previously there has not been sufficient data to create a benchmark for this, and therefore an exemption from scoring in the water and energy sections of the leather manufacturer audit has been given to those whose production is more than 75% calfskin. Sufficient data has now been collected however and benchmarks for calfskin production for water and energy consumption have been established. The use of these will come into effect from the 1st February 2024, and Audits undertaken on or after this date will not be eligible for exemption from these sections for calfskin production.
